Art of Seeing - Composition and Observation 1 Day Workshop - You pick the date

The Art of Seeing Photography Workshop focuses on observation and composition in Landscape and Nature Photography.  This full day workshop will teach you many new photography skills while we practice in a stunning landscape of Southern Utah.  Composition is often the single most challenging aspects of Nature Photography for many people.  We will practice in the field under various conditions and with different subjects.

All photography skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.  You’ll receive 1:1 professional instruction along with time to practice for yourself.  This workshop is NOT a tour by any means, it’s a focused workshop to learn and have fun!

Over the course of the day we’ll visit several locations to provide different learning opportunities.  We may be by water, in forests, in a canyon or among creosote deserts.  Locations aren’t the focus of this workshop but I can assure you we’ll visit beautiful places.  We’re aiming to learn more about composition, observation and seeing in this focused workshop.

  • Minimal hiking  is required for most locations.

Why is observing and composition important?

“A mediocre man copying nature will never produce a work of art, because he really looks without seeing, and though he may have noted each detail minutely, the result will be flat and without character… the artist on the contrary, sees; that is to say, his eye, grafted on his heart, reads deeply into the bosom of nature.”

~ Auguste Rodin ~

This workshop is all about teaching you to observe in the field and using those observations to build compositions.  Practicing observation is a useful skill which must be demonstrated and practiced in the field.  We’ll identify areas of opportunity, explore and make note of our observations.

This workshop is intentionally slow paced to allow time to observe, explore and notice.  This also allows time to work on each and every composition with deliberation.  We’ll identify compositional elements and walk through each composition together. This workshop will give you skills and practice to discover compositions on your own, no matter where you travel.  Join me and see for yourself.
