Photo Workshop

Southern Utah

Intimate Landscape Photography 1 Day Workshop - You pick the date

The intimate landscape is defined by a smaller section of the landscape, often below the horizon line.  Elements of Nature are combined and composed in a way which highlight the subject and eliminate distracting elements surrounding the subject.  This is much more difficult than it sounds!  This workshop will build your skills to create more meaningful intimate landscape photographs.

All photography skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.  You’ll receive 1:1 professional instruction along with time to practice for yourself.  This workshop is NOT a tour by any means, it’s a focused workshop to learn and have fun!

The Details

Intimate Landscape Photography
1-Day Workshop

Escape the crowds of Zion National Park while learning new photography skills. Our 1-Day Intimate Landscape Photo Workshop is offered daily for all skill levels of photography, just outside of Zion National Park.  St. George, Hurricane, Virgin, Leeds are all areas in “Greater Zion” and the landscape here is a photography playground.

Over the course of the day we’ll visit several locations to provide different learning opportunities.  We may be by water, in forests, in a canyon or among creosote deserts.  Locations aren’t the focus of this workshop but I can assure you we’ll visit beautiful places.  We’re aiming to practice locating, composing and creating intimate landscapes in this focused workshop.

  • Minimal hiking  is required for most locations.
  • Hiking is customized for your abilities.
  • You must be able to carry and transport all of your own photography gear.  We’re able to help within reason.  If you need assistance, please arrange this with us prior to booking.
  • We’ll be at elevations ranging from 3,000 – 7,000 ft above sea level.  Summers are hot here, Fall & Spring are perfect and Winter is chilly but mostly mild. Stay hydrated, rest and know hiking/walking will be a little slower here.

What is an intimate landscape photograph?

“…through this photographic eye you will be able to look out on a new light-world, a world for the most part uncharted and unexplored, a world that lies waiting to be discovered and revealed.”

~ Edward Weston ~

Intimate Landscape Photography is all about looking beyond the grander landscape and honing in on the elements of Nature on a smaller scale.  It’s not macro photography as scale is somewhat irrelevant.  It is all about the elimination of distractions and composing an element in a poetic way.  This approach is slow and takes careful attention when composing.  The challenge is to find such scenes in the first place which we’ll explore throughout this workshop.

Intimate Landscapes are images that work well for storytelling, fine art prints and a representation of the artist’s connection to Nature.  The grand landscape relies on large-scale conditions while the intimate landscape relies on the same conditions and more.  In this workshop we’ll learn various techniques to locating such scenes, methods for composing the image and review which elements to eliminate.  I specialize in this type of photography and it’s one of my favorites to teach others.  Join me to see why:)

Are you looking for extended learning and a more in-depth experience in the Greater Zion area?  Consider our Greater Zion 1 Day Workshop or join a Custom Photography Workshop. Other Artist Series Workshops will explore this area and various techniques I use in my own work.
