Photographing Waterfalls in Zion National Park
March 15, 2023 – Yet another atmospheric river event over the SW Utah in a Winter of relentless storms. Currently as of March 23 when I’m writing this, Utah is sitting at 190% Snowpack state wide and near record SWE (Snow Water Equivalent) which will certainly also be surpassed. This day was a warmer day with heavy rain for nearly 12 hours. Much of the snow at mid elevations melted on this day with the rain, causing every stream and waterfall in the park to flow constantly. This is a dream for me to see Zion flowing in so much water and experiencing a record to near-record season.
This is only one single day and all were photographed in pouring rain. I’ve been sharing videos from this day on my Instagram to see a little of these locations in motion. Shooting in the rain is incredibly challenging for reasons you may already know and in Zion, safety is also a HUGE concern. There are so many places to go to look at waterfalls, hundreds are visible on the Shuttle on a rainy day! I wanted to head out to find a few that were a bit more “wild” and came across one scene that led to several images. 2 of the other images are falls near the road but hopefully from a perspective you haven’t seen before.
Lastly, all images were photographed using a technique I use often in my work of creating stitched panoramic images instead of wide angle lenses. The lens I use, and also my favorite, is an older Nikkor (manual focus and not weather sealed!) which makes this type of shooting quite easy. I’ll have to expand on these 2 ideas in a future blog post. You can always join me for a 1 Day workshop and I guarantee you’ll learn this skill and WAY more:)

Photographing Bryce Canyon National Park in Winter
February 15, 2023
I recently spent a day by myself in Bryce Canyon to explore and shoot during a storm. The morning temperature was around -35ºF with wind-chill but did warm up to a balmy -10ºF wind-chill later in the day:) All images were made in a single day under blizzard conditions and needless to say, a challenge. Shooting in such conditions takes extra precautions and equipment doesn’t work with screens slowing down, icing up and condensation. With experience, shooting in these conditions becomes more manageable and a Winter Wonderland awaits.
Something interesting with this set of images is I honestly thought I hadn’t captured anything at all. Bryce is surely beautiful but conditions were a challenge and I was tired from not sleeping well. I went out, tried my best and felt I hadn’t gotten anything of interest. It wasn’t until a few days later, once I thawed out that I saw that I had actually captured images! The point is to give yourself a little break from the experience to see your own images. Hope you enjoy:) Eric

Bryce Canyon 1-Day Workshop
Bryce Canyon is getting a lot of snow this year and conditions are nearly as good as it gets already! Week 1 of the Winter Wonderland workshop brought amazing conditions and February brought a gnarly windstorm and frigid temperatures of -35ºF wind chill. More snow is on the way and March is still snowing!
This image was made 40 minutes before sunrise earlier this Winter.
Come see for yourself and join me in Bryce Canyon!
